On the Road to Maryland
For those who don't know what a VicFest is, I'll explain. In the late 70's and early 80's
The McVay family produced about a thousand sailboats called Victoria 18's. They were very
well designed and constructed. To use an automotive metaphor, they turned out to have the
durability of a Volvo with the handling charactistics and sexy looks of a Fararri. Twenty
five years after production stopped, they still have a small but very loyal following. They
are such a joy to sail that many are compelled to seek out the company of other Victoria
owners so they can share their glee with other sailors who will "get it". Hence Vicfest.
From what I can tell it was the seemingly infinite enthusiasm of Donald Peavey that got it
started 6 or 7 years ago. This year it took place in Rock Hall Maryland on the Chesapeake
Bay. It was my first time attending one of these events so I didn't know what to expect,
but I had a great time. The people that showed up came from Georgia, South Carolina,
Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Upstate New York. They were as diverse and as interesting
as any group of people I've ever met and all bound together by a visceral love of Victorias.
The sailing on the Bay was fantastic. A ten to fifteen mph breeze and swells of only a foot
or two. We all put up all the sail we had and flew all over the bay. It was a perfect day.
To steal a phrase from Woody Allen, it was the most fun I ever had without laughing.
